Seed Library

About Shared Harvest

Shared Harvest is New Castle-Henry County Public Library's seed library. It is free for our patrons to use and is available during the library's regular hours from late February to October. It is located on the upper level in front of the Indiana Room. The Bookmobile also has a small, portable selection of our seeds.

Our Mission

The mission of Shared Harvest is to foster a healthy community and sustainability by providing a seed library that supports the longevity and integrity of heirloom seeds.

What is a seed lending library?

A seed library contains a selection of heirloom seeds that residents can borrow for no charge. When their plants grow, the recipients of the seeds donate a portion of the seeds from their own plants back to the seed library for others to use.

How do I use Shared Harvest?

It's easy to use Shared Harvest. Come in and fill out the membership form and place it in the designated box. Select the seeds you would like to try in your garden, write your name and the seed names you selected in the black binder. Plant your seeds and in the fall when you harvest your garden, save some seeds for the library. You can place these seeds back in the original envelope with seed information and return to the library. If you misplace your envelope, we have extras. We will offer programs on seed saving and also have links to the right about seed saving.

How can I volunteer at Shared Harvest?

At the beginning of the season, we can use help in packing seed packets. Other volunteer opportunitites may also arise. If you are interested in volunteering with Shared Harvest, please complete the form below.
