Unacceptable Behavior

Unacceptable behaviors in the library include:

  • Unauthorized removal or attempted removal of materials,
  • Failure to return materials
  • Smoking in the library, or use of any tobacco products
  • Failure to evacuate in an emergency or during a drill
  • Being in an unauthorized area
  • Theft of or damaging equipment and other property, Non-emergency activation of alarms
  • Malicious modification of information systems
  • Failure to pay library fees
  • Exhibitionism, voyeurism
  • Copyright violations
  • Bringing animals in the building (except guide / assisting dogs) Leaving children unsupervised
  • Skating, skateboarding, or bicycling on library property, Soliciting, gambling, panhandling.
  • Violence, sexual or other types of harassment
  • Use of alcohol or drugs
  • Loitering
  • Excessive loud noise
  • Fighting
  • Carrying weapons, except as allowed by IC 35-47-11.1
  • Failure to wear appropriate attire including shirt and shoes.

Patrons who become violent, who attempt to intimidate staff or other patrons, who harass staff or other patrons, or who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be tolerated in the library.

If staff becomes aware of any specific behavior stated above or bullying and / or inappropriate or offensive behavior in the library, staff may:

  1. Refer the situation to the Director who may request that persons involved leave the library immediately or may phone the police for assistance.
  2. In the Directors absence request the persons leave the library immediately or may phone the police for assistance.

The Director may determine that a situation which occurred is sufficiently serious enough to eject the person(s) involved from the building and suspend library privileges for a specific time period or permanently.
